"Welcome to Westfalia" was a site-specific installation in Isabelle Percy West Gallery at California College of the Arts. It was part of a group show called "Boundaries" in which the gallery was divided into 13 6' x 8' rectangles. I created a country in the rectangle, called Westfalia, founded in 1907 by Isabelle Percy West. The installation included two flags, photographs of I.P.W., a history of the country, and a fable of the founder called "Isabelle Percy West and the Ink Jet Printer," modeled after the John Henry fable. There was also hand-printed currency and postcards, and hand-made hammered copper keychain souvenirs. Visitors could exchange currency and purchase souvenirs, as well as ask questions and explore the country. I personally manned the "customs desk" on the evening of the reception, wearing the Westfalia customs uniform of brown suit, white shirt, green tie and beret, and a hand-made copper name tag.
