Love Money was created for Hare and the Hounds at BlueSpace in San Francisco. Artists each placed one "reference" piece in the show, then created another piece which was hidden in the Mission District, and displayed a map in the gallery that would lead its buyer to the hidden piece. I created the simulated-ruby heart because I often hear from people that they want the quarters that I produce, that they desire to own them. I compared that desire to the desire to have money, or to the desire one has for a lover, hence the overall "valentine" theme of the project. I photographed the quarter and provided the print as my reference piece, then gave the actual quarter to the Candystore Collective, a boutique on 16th street. The buyer of the map follows the directions to the store, but is then asked to purchase a heart-shaped chocolate with the decorated dollar bill. I am, in essence, forcing the buyer to choose between the bird in the hand and the two in the bush. The quarter or the map, then, would become a "gift" to the Candystore Collective for their participation in the project. It is important to me to be more generous in my art, and I draw strongly on issues of barter and gift economies as a model.
